Hey there, friends. Picture this: Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s love story with Prince Frederik has always been the stuff of modern-day fairy tales. But guess what? This story has a magical twist. As the Aussie-born royal recently revealed, it was practically written in the stars! Imagine this: someone predicted her famous relationship with Prince Frederik before she even met him. This week, the Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad shared an excerpt from Prince Frederik’s official biography, Under the Bar, and it sheds new light on that unforgettable first meeting in Sydney back in 2000. Mary, now the mother of four, opened up to author Jens Andersen about her life before she became Princess Mary.

A Chance Encounter at the Flea Market

Let’s rewind to the year 2000. Mary Donaldson, a 28-year-old advertising executive from Australia, was strolling through a local flea market in Sydney. Life was good, her career was flourishing, and she was just enjoying a casual Saturday. That’s when she stumbled upon a tarot card reader. On a whim, young Mary decided to give the fortune teller a try. What happened next was nothing short of extraordinary. The soothsayer laid out a series of tarot cards in front of her. These cards weren’t your run-of-the-mill deck—they looked like they dated back to mid-15th century Europe, steeped in history and mystery.

As the cards were turned over, the fortune teller started dropping one truth bomb after another. Mary was told she’d leave her dream job for a man, and not just any man—this guy would be worldly, sophisticated, and from abroad. The prediction didn’t stop there. The fortune teller also foretold that Mary would become famous and move to Europe. Could this really be possible? Mary left the flea market that day with a smile on her face, thinking it was all just a fun experience. But deep down, she was intrigued by the idea of fate and destiny.

    When Destiny Calls

Mary confessed in her husband’s autobiography, “So I left there and thought, ‘Well yes, that was a lot of fun, but nothing more.’ But I’ve always been interested in the spiritual… In mystery and fate.” Fate, it seems, had other plans for Mary. Just months later, during the Sydney Olympics, Mary Donaldson found herself at the right place at the right time. At a local pub, she met a charming guy named Fred. They hit it off instantly, chatting the night away. Fred, with his European accent, seemed like a down-to-earth guy with a mysterious air about him. “The first time we met, we shook hands,” Mary recalled. “I didn’t know he was the prince of Denmark. Half an hour later, someone came up to me and said, ‘Do you know who these people are?’”

Their night together was magical. They danced until the early hours of the morning, and Fred walked her home, asking for her phone number before saying goodbye. Little did Mary know, this chance encounter would change her life forever.

    A Long-Distance Love Story

For months, Mary and Fred’s romance played out over the phone. Mary, who had always believed in fate, found herself wandering the streets of Sydney, listening to Dido’s “Here With Me” on her Discman whenever she missed her royal beau. Despite the distance, their connection only grew stronger. Four years later, in 2004, they tied the knot in a breathtaking royal wedding that captured the hearts of millions around the world. Mary became Princess Mary, leaving her job and moving to Denmark for the love of her life. Today, they’ve been happily married for nearly 14 years and are the proud parents of four children: 12-year-old Prince Christian, 10-year-old Princess Isabella, and six-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

    Prince Frederik’s Take on Fate

Prince Frederik, while respecting the role of fate in their love story, is a firm believer in carving his own destiny. In his new book, he shared, “I believe in fate. When I look back on all the exciting things that have happened to me, it’s not random. But I don’t try to look ahead and say, ‘Can I predict my destiny for the next two years?’ I don’t want to talk to anyone who claims they can. No one should read anything about me and my future.” Clearly, Fred and Mary are a perfect match—opposites who complement each other beautifully.
