There are moments in life that leave an indelible mark on our hearts. For former Vice President Joe Biden, one of those moments came during the final days of his son, Beau Biden. In a deeply emotional interview with Oprah Winfrey on her show Super Soul Sunday, Joe shared the poignant final moments he spent with his eldest child. "[Beau] looked at me and said, 'Dad, I’m not afraid. I’m okay.' It was at the very end," Joe recalled. "His brother, Hunter Biden, was sitting there, and the three of us were holding hands. Beau wanted to reassure us that he was okay." It’s a memory that Joe carries with him every day, a testament to Beau’s strength and grace even in the face of death.

A Life Cut Short: Remembering Beau Biden

Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III was born in February 1969 to Joe, now 74, and his late first wife, Neilia Biden. Beau was not just a son; he was a public servant, a father, and a beloved member of his community. At the age of 44, Beau, who served as the Attorney General of Delaware and was a major in the Delaware Army National Guard, was diagnosed with brain cancer. The diagnosis came as a shock to everyone, but Beau faced it with the same courage and determination that defined his life. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation, battling the disease with unwavering strength. Tragically, in May 2015, Beau was hospitalized again due to a recurrence of his brain cancer. Just ten days later, on June 6, 2015, Beau passed away at the age of 46, leaving behind his wife, Hallie Biden, and their two young children, Natalie and Hunter.

  • Speaking to Oprah, Joe remembered how Beau consistently reassured his family during his battle with cancer. "I’d see him, and he’d say, 'Dad, look at me. Stop looking sad… no matter what happens, I’m gonna be alright, Dad. You’ve got to look happy. You’ve got to look strong for the family,'" Joe recounted. "Today, I find comfort in my grandson — Beau’s son — and in my granddaughter. When I see them, I see Beau. I know he’s still here. He’s still with me." It’s a powerful reminder of how love transcends even the boundaries of life and death.

A New Chapter: Healing and Moving Forward

Earlier this year, Joe and his wife, Jill Biden, shared the news that Beau’s widow, Hallie, is now dating her late husband’s brother, Hunter. This relationship began just months after Beau’s passing, when Hunter, 47, separated from his wife, Katheleen Biden, in October 2015. "We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness," Joe said. "They have mine and Jill’s full and complete support, and we are happy for them." It’s a testament to the strength of the Biden family and their ability to find love and support in the darkest of times.

Hunter echoed these sentiments in a statement in March 2017. "Hallie and I are incredibly lucky to have found the love and support we have for each other in such a difficult time, and that’s been obvious to the people who love us most," he said. "We’ve been so lucky to have family and friends who have supported us every step of the way." It’s a story of resilience and hope, a reminder that even in the wake of tragedy, love can find a way to grow and flourish.
