Hey there, friends! Let’s dive into something a little nostalgic and fascinating. In an exclusive chat with Closer Weekly, Tom Cullen, the talented actor who's now starring in Knightfall, took a trip down memory lane to talk about his time on Downton Abbey. If you’re a fan of the show (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), you’re going to love what he had to say. Spoiler alert: not everything about his time on the series was as glamorous as it seemed!

Now, picture this: you’re on set, living the dream, playing one of the most iconic characters in a beloved series. But here’s the twist—those fancy costumes? Not exactly comfortable. Tom revealed during a Facebook Live session that the outfits were more of a challenge than you might think. “In Knightfall, I had to wear chain mail, which weighed about 50 pounds. That was tough, but you know what was even worse? The costumes in Downton Abbey,” he confessed with a laugh. “They had these super-stiff shirts that practically had to be screwed onto you. And if you slouched, it made you look like you had giant man boobs. Not exactly flattering, right? Plus, it was murder on your back. I don’t miss that part at all!”

But it wasn’t all bad. While Tom might not miss those tricky costumes, he does have fond memories of working with some of the show’s legendary cast members. “What I DO miss is working with Maggie Smith. She’s just incredible. We got along really well, and she’s such a riot. Unfortunately, I haven’t been in touch with her lately—she’s too cool for that—but I’ve got some amazing stories about her. She’s truly one of a kind,” Tom shared warmly. And if you’re wondering whether the cast stays connected, the answer is yes, for the most part. “I keep in touch with a lot of the crew and actors from Downton Abbey. It was such a special experience,” he added.

Reuniting with Familiar Faces on Knightfall

One of the coolest things about Tom’s new role in Knightfall is that it’s brought him back together with some familiar faces. “We’ve got Jim Carter, who played Mr. Carson in Downton Abbey, now playing the Pope in Knightfall. It was so great reconnecting with him. And Julian Ovenden, who was my love rival in Downton Abbey, is also my rival in Knightfall. He’s absolutely killing it in this role—it’s fantastic,” Tom gushed. “It was a real treat to look Jim Carter in the eyes because he’s not playing the butler anymore. Let me tell you, the guy has gorgeous eyes!”

Knightfall airs every Wednesday night at 10 p.m. EST on the History channel. If you haven’t tuned in yet, it’s definitely worth a watch. Tom and the rest of the cast are bringing the medieval world to life in a way that’s both thrilling and deeply engaging.
