Let's talk about a royal first day! All eyes were on Prince George yesterday as he walked into Thomas’s Battersea for his first day at school. But guess what? He wasn’t the only little royal starting school that day. Maud Windsor, the adorable four-year-old daughter of Lord Frederick and Lady Sophie Windsor, joined him in the same reception class. It’s like a royal playdate, but with uniforms and learning.
First Days and Royal Traditions
Like any other first-day-of-school moment, Maud was escorted by her dad, Lord Frederick Windsor, just as Prince George was by his dad, Prince William. But wait—where was Kate Middleton? Unfortunately, she couldn’t be there as planned because she's dealing with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness, during her third pregnancy. That must have been tough, but we’re sure she’s cheering them on from home.

Both kids were dressed to impress in the school's navy and red uniform. While Prince George rocked the shorts and V-neck sweater combo, Maud opted for a skirt, a button-down cardigan, and a cute bow in her hair. Style points all around! Lord Frederick Windsor, or "Freddie," is the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, making him a first cousin twice removed to Queen Elizabeth. So, Maud is technically a distant cousin to young Prince George. It’s like a royal family reunion, but in a classroom.
Meet Maud Windsor: The Other Little Royal
Maud’s mom, Sophie (née Winkleman), is an actress best known for her role as Big Suze on the British sitcom Peep Show. Born in Los Angeles on August 15, 2013, Maud has royal connections through her godmother, Princess Eugenie, and was baptized at St James’s Palace, just like Prince George. She also has a younger sister, Isabella Windsor, born on January 16, 2016. It’s a whole Windsor family affair!
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are thrilled to share this sweet photo of Prince George and his dad at Kensington Palace. Taken by @chrisjacksongetty shortly before George’s first day of school, it captures a special moment between father and son. Their Royal Highnesses are excited to share this picture as George starts school and want to thank everyone for their kind messages.

No Special Treatment for the Little Prince
Ben Thomas, the principal of Thomas’s London Day Schools, made it clear that Prince George, who will be known as George Cambridge in class, will be treated just like any other student. “Our goal for him, as well as all our pupils, is to create a safe, secure, and happy environment where he feels supported by a kind and loving community,” he said. “There won’t be any special treatment at all.”
Thomas also gave us a peek into what the first day will be like for George and his classmates. “He’ll focus on getting familiar with his classroom. He’ll meet his form teacher and teaching assistant. It’ll be a gentle introduction to school life. The emphasis will be on a very, very gentle start,” he explained. Sounds like they’re setting the stage for a smooth transition into school life for all the little ones.
