When it comes to family resemblance, sometimes it’s not just looks that get passed down—it’s character, too. In a heartfelt moment captured in HBO’s documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, legendary musician Elton John shared his thoughts on Princess Diana and her lasting influence on her youngest son, Prince Harry. According to Elton, the late princess's remarkable ability to connect with people is something Harry has clearly inherited.
Speaking about Diana, Elton, now in his 70s, said, “She had this incredible gift—something that Harry has picked up from her—to make people feel completely at ease. It’s a rare quality, and I’ve only encountered it in a handful of individuals throughout my life. But she could walk into a room full of strangers and instantly make everyone feel like everything was going to be okay.” It’s this unique ability that Elton believes sets Diana apart and continues to shine through in Harry’s work today.

Princess Diana was a trailblazer in her efforts to destigmatize HIV/AIDS during the late '80s and early '90s, a time when the disease was heavily misunderstood and feared. Elton described the princess’s compassion as nothing short of extraordinary. “Back then, HIV/AIDS was seen as a ‘gay disease,’” he explained. “For someone within the royal family—a woman, who was straight—to show such care and empathy was truly an incredible gift. She broke barriers and changed perceptions, and that’s something we should all remember her for.”

Harry Continues Diana's Legacy Through Philanthropy
In 2015, Prince Harry, then 32, founded the Mamohato Children’s Centre in Lesotho, Africa, an initiative aimed at supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS. It’s a cause that deeply resonates with him, and one that honors his mother’s memory. In fact, Harry paid tribute to Lady Di by naming one of the orphanage’s dining halls after her. This gesture reflects not just his love for his mother but also his commitment to continuing her work.
“The behind-the-scenes work is just as important, if not more so,” Harry once said, echoing the values instilled in him by his mother. “That’s where you really learn. You gain experiences, and people open up to you in ways they might not otherwise. Our mom did so much of this kind of work, quietly and effectively, and it’s something my brother William and I take to heart.”
Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy premiered on HBO Monday, July 24, at 10 p.m. EST. Don’t miss this touching tribute to one of the most beloved figures of our time.
