Hey there, friends! Let’s talk about a major milestone for the Obama family. Malia Obama, the former First Daughter, has officially moved into her student residence at Harvard University. According to People, this exciting transition happened earlier this week. On Monday, August 21, Malia, along with her famous parents, Barack and Michelle Obama, were seen strolling around Harvard's picturesque campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. With the fall semester classes set to kick off on Wednesday, August 30, Malia is all set to immerse herself in the vibrant academic world of Harvard.

Let’s rewind a bit. Malia graduated from the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., back in June 2016. Just a month before her graduation, her proud parents, Barack, 56, and Michelle, 53, announced that their eldest daughter— they also have a younger daughter, Sasha, 16— would be enrolling at Harvard after taking a gap year. This decision wasn't just about taking a break; it was about exploring the world and gaining life experiences before diving into higher education.

At first, it wasn’t clear what Malia planned to do during her gap year. Harvard encourages incoming students to travel and engage in meaningful projects before starting their college journey. As per the Ivy League university’s website, “each year, between 80 and 110 students choose to defer their matriculation to Harvard” to take advantage of this unique opportunity. It's a chance to explore the world and gain valuable experiences outside the classroom.

    Malia's Gap Year Adventures

In January, it was revealed that Malia had secured a prestigious internship with Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein in New York City. The teen began working for Harvey—who has been behind blockbuster hits like Shakespeare in Love, Gangs of New York, Pulp Fiction, and My Week with Marilyn—at the Weinstein Company’s New York offices just a month later. This wasn’t Malia’s first foray into the world of entertainment, though. Back in 2015, she spent her summer working on Lena Dunham’s hit HBO series Girls in NYC. She also worked as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s CBS show Extant, which was executive produced by Steven Spielberg. And if that wasn’t enough, she even interned for an undisclosed fashion house in the past. Talk about a diverse range of experiences!

    Parental Pride and Nerves

In a candid interview, Malia’s dad, Barack, opened up about how he and Michelle— who graduated from Harvard Law School back in 1988— felt about their firstborn heading off to college. “It doesn’t make any sense. Michelle and I are way too young to have daughters who are both almost in college now. As a parent, I’m a little freaked out,” he admitted. It’s so relatable, isn’t it? Watching your kids grow up and spread their wings is both exciting and nerve-wracking.
