When you ask Jennifer Morrison about her favorite television role, the answer isn’t as straightforward as you might expect. The accomplished actress, who has graced our screens in iconic shows like House, Once Upon a Time, How I Met Your Mother, and This Is Us, finds it nearly impossible to choose just one. “It’s like asking me to pick a favorite child,” she joked with Closer. “Each of these roles has brought something special to my life and career.”
“Take House, for instance. Playing Dr. Allison Cameron was such a formative experience. It was my first major TV role, and it completely changed my life. Then there’s Once Upon a Time, where I got to embody the fierce and compassionate Emma Swan. That show allowed me to explore the world of fairy tales and fantasy in a way that was both thrilling and creatively fulfilling,” Jennifer explained. “And don’t get me started on How I Met Your Mother. It was a completely different vibe—a comedy where I got to make people laugh. And This Is Us? Well, that was a deeply emotional journey. Each of these shows has left an indelible mark on me.”
From Tracker to Yellowjackets: Jennifer’s Exciting Projects
With a career as illustrious as Jennifer Morrison’s, it’s no surprise that she’s in high demand. Recently, she reunited with This Is Us co-star Justin Hartley on the show Tracker, and she’s also stepping behind the camera to direct an episode of the third season of Yellowjackets. “Yellowjackets is unlike anything I’ve ever worked on. It’s dark, twisted, and utterly captivating. Directing an episode of that show is a dream come true,” Jennifer shared enthusiastically.

“Directing has always been a passion of mine, even before I became an actor. I started out directing community theater back in my hometown, and I fell in love with the process. It’s a completely different way of storytelling, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to bring my vision to life in such a unique and groundbreaking show.”
Reuniting with Justin Hartley on Tracker
This Is Us fans were thrilled to see Jennifer and Justin Hartley reunite on Tracker. How did this collaboration come about? “It was actually Justin’s idea. We had such a great rapport on This Is Us, and he thought it would be fun to work together again. Honestly, that’s what I love most about this industry—the chance to collaborate with people I admire and respect,” Jennifer said.
“When Justin invited me to be a part of Tracker, I jumped at the opportunity. It’s not just about the work; it’s about the relationships you build along the way. Justin is one of those people who makes every day on set a joy. I’m so grateful for the chance to work with him again.”
Will Jennifer’s Character Return to Tracker?
“I can’t say too much, but I think my character is set to return this season. They’ve also invited me to direct an episode, which is incredibly exciting. Directing is something I’ve always been passionate about, and it’s great to have the chance to explore that side of my craft on such a dynamic show,” Jennifer revealed.
From Acting to Directing: A Dual Career
While Jennifer is best known for her acting prowess, directing has always been a part of her artistic journey. “I’ve always had a dual career path. Even as I was pursuing acting, I was directing community theater and small-scale productions in Los Angeles. It’s something I’ve always been drawn to, but my acting career really took off when I was cast in House. That show consumed my life in the best possible way, but I never lost my passion for directing,” she explained.
“Casting for House was an interesting experience. I auditioned for the role of Dr. Cameron, and at the time, my hair was dark because I had just finished filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. When I left the audition room, Bryan Singer, who was part of the casting team, said, ‘That’s the girl.’ But they also liked my blonde audition tape and didn’t realize it was the same person! So, I was essentially competing against myself for the job, which was pretty funny.”

Memorable Moments from Once Upon a Time
One of Jennifer’s most cherished memories comes from her time on Once Upon a Time. “The Peter Pan storyline in Season 3 was a highlight for me. They built an entire Neverland set on a soundstage, and it was magical. We had so many cast members working together, and it felt like we were creating something truly special. It was like hanging out with your best friends every day and crafting this incredible story together,” she recalled fondly.
Joining the Cast of How I Met Your Mother
“When I joined How I Met Your Mother, I was such a huge fan of the show. I remember walking onto the set and asking if I could just sit in the booth at MacLaren’s Pub. They looked at me like I was crazy, but for me, it was a dream come true. Coming from a very serious show like House, it was such a joy to go to work every day and make people laugh. It was a completely different energy, and I loved every minute of it,” Jennifer said.
Life on the Set of This Is Us
Joining the cast of This Is Us in Season 3 was another career-defining moment for Jennifer. “My first scenes were set in Afghanistan, and we shot them in the desert outside of Los Angeles. It was so hot, and the gear was incredibly heavy, but it was an intense and satisfying way to start that show. I just dove in headfirst,” she recalled.
“One of the most memorable moments for me was during Kate’s second wedding. It was the first time I got to be with the entire cast, and it was also the first time I had the chance to work closely with Mandy Moore. There’s a scene where Mandy, playing an older Rebecca, sings a song, and it was absolutely stunning. I couldn’t stop crying. It was one of those moments where everything just hits you—the beauty of the story, the talent of the cast, and the magic of the show.”
