In December 2024, the entertainment world mourned the loss of a true icon when it was announced that Linda Lavin had passed away unexpectedly at the age of 87. Linda, a beloved figure in both theater and television, was in the middle of filming the Golden Girls-inspired Hulu comedy Mid-Century Modern alongside Nathan Lane, Nathan Lee Graham, and Matt Bomer. At the time of her passing, only a few episodes remained to be filmed. The series, which premiered on Hulu on March 28, 2025, honored Linda with a deeply moving tribute in its penultimate episode. Let's take a closer look at how Linda passed away in real life and how her character's story was handled on Mid-Century Modern.

Unveiling Linda Lavin's Cause of Death

The news of Linda's passing broke on December 29, 2024, when her public relations representative confirmed the tragic loss to Deadline. It was revealed that Linda had passed away unexpectedly due to complications from recently diagnosed lung cancer. Her death certificate, obtained by TMZ in January 2025, further detailed that Linda succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest, commonly known as cardiac arrest, which halts blood flow to the heart. Lung cancer was cited as the underlying cause of her passing.

Just days before her passing, Linda underwent a bronchoscopy, a medical procedure where a physician examines the airways to diagnose or treat lung conditions. It's clear that Linda faced a sudden and challenging health battle, which ultimately led to her untimely death.

Linda's final role before her passing was as Sybil Schneiderman in Mid-Century Modern. Sybil was the loving mother of Nathan Lane's Bunny Schneiderman and a cherished mother figure to his two best friends, Arthur Broussurd (played by Nathan Lee Graham) and Jerry Frank (played by Matt Bomer). She appeared in eight out of the show's ten episodes.

Episode 9, titled "Here's to You, Mrs. Schneiderman," marked a poignant shift from the series' usual lighthearted humor. The episode began with Bunny tearfully informing his friends that his mother had passed away unexpectedly while they were on a drive together. Despite Bunny's desperate efforts to rush her to the hospital, Sybil had already succumbed to a heart attack by the time they arrived. The remainder of the episode followed Bunny as he penned a heartfelt eulogy for Sybil and cohosted a funeral for his beloved mother with Arthur and Jerry.

Linda's Vision for Her Character's Farewell

The creators of Mid-Century Modern, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan—who also brought us the beloved Will & Grace—shared with TV Line that Linda herself had a vision for how her character's story should conclude. "When she was diagnosed with lung cancer, she said, 'I don't know how I'm going to respond to this, but whatever it is, write it into the character,'" David recounted.

Max added, "Only David, Nathan Lane, and I were aware of what was happening, and she was crystal clear with the three of us that she wanted us to tell the truth. She certainly had no idea that things would unfold the way they did." He continued, "She had discussed it with us and her husband, Steve Bakunas, so when the moment came, it gave us the go-ahead and the comfort to sit down with Steve and say, 'Hey, we'd like to write the last day exactly as it happened and make that our story.' Without hesitation, Steve responded, 'Of course that's what you have to do, because that's what Linda would want you to do.'"
