Murder, She Wrote star Angela Lansbury left an indelible mark on the entertainment world with her remarkable career and timeless performances. The legendary actress passed away peacefully on October 11, 2022, just five days before her 97th birthday, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.

Angela’s Farewell: A Heartfelt Goodbye

“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are deeply saddened to announce that their beloved mother passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022,” Closer Weekly shared in a heartfelt statement. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her memory will live on through her incredible work and the lives she touched.

A Family Legacy: Balancing Career and Motherhood

Throughout her illustrious career, Angela managed to juggle the demands of Hollywood with the joys of raising a family. With her second husband, Peter Shaw, she welcomed two children, Anthony Shaw and Deidre Shaw. Peter also had a son from a previous marriage, David Shaw, whom Angela embraced as her own. Together, they created a loving family dynamic that spanned generations.

  • “In addition to her three children, Anthony, Deirdre, and David, she is survived by three grandchildren—Peter, Katherine, and Ian—as well as five great-grandchildren and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury,” the statement continued. “She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Peter Shaw. A private family ceremony will be held at a date yet to be determined.”

A Journey Through Fame and Family

Angela Lansbury was born in London in 1925, and her journey into the world of entertainment began in the 1940s. Her early years in theater set the stage for her transition to film, where she quickly made a name for herself. In 1944, she landed a pivotal role in the film Gaslight. This role earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Academy Awards, marking the start of a lifetime filled with award-winning performances and unforgettable roles.

Love and Marriage: Angela’s Personal Life

Angela’s personal life was just as fascinating as her professional one. She married her first husband, Richard Cromwell, in 1945, but the marriage ended after just one year, with no children. It wasn’t long before she found love again with Peter Shaw, whom she married in 1949. Peter’s son, David, became a cherished part of their blended family, and together they welcomed their own children, Anthony in January 1952 and Deidre in April 1953.

Despite her success, Angela often reflected on the challenges of balancing motherhood with her demanding career. “As soon as I had the babies, I went on a diet and I was back in business,” she revealed in a March 2014 interview. “I regret that. You have to be with your children.”

    Shifting Priorities: A New Chapter

Eventually, Angela and her family made the decision to move from Malibu to Ireland, where she focused more on nurturing her relationships with her children. This shift allowed her to prioritize her family and strengthen their bonds. She remained married to Peter until his passing in 2003 from heart failure, and she continued to take immense pride in her role as a great-grandmother.

“One of the biggest joys for me right now is my family. I’ve just become a great-grandma for the first time. It’s my grandson Peter’s first child—now that feels pretty wonderful,” Angela told Woman & Home in December 2017. “And of course, I’m doing all the spoiling. If there’s one thing I want more time for at this stage of my life, it’s them.”
