He’s been making us laugh for decades with unforgettable performances in blockbuster films like Parenthood, The Pink Panther, and Cheaper by the Dozen. But there’s more to Steve Martin than just his comedic genius. Beneath the humor lies a devoted father who has poured his heart into raising his only child, Mary, with his second wife, Anne Stringfield.

Steve and Anne, who exchanged vows in 2007, welcomed their cherished daughter in 2012. Their joy knew no bounds when they became parents, and the couple couldn’t have been prouder of their little miracle. As Steve once joked on David Letterman's late-night show shortly after Mary's birth, "It’s going great because I have a wonderful wife and mother. I’m paying her a compliment — everything is funny when I try to be serious!"

A Late Start to Parenthood

For Steve Martin, fatherhood wasn’t always on the horizon. In fact, the star of Roxanne once confessed to Fox News that he "never thought" he’d experience parenthood in real life. But why did he wait so long? During an interview with AARP magazine in 2017, the iconic actor opened up about his decision to delay starting a family.

  • “I think if I’d had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career,” he explained candidly. “Now, I’m very forthcoming with her, and it’s great. She’s giving me way more than I’m giving her.” It’s clear that Steve’s approach to parenting reflects the wisdom and maturity that come with age.

    Life After Hollywood: Prioritizing Family

These days, Steve Martin is more excited than ever to embrace his role as a loving father. After his previous marriage to Victoria Tennant (from 1986 to 1994), the star of Planes, Trains and Automobiles decided to step back from the Hollywood limelight to focus on what truly matters—his family. In an interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph in April 2020, he shared just how rewarding this decision has been.

“Oh, it’s fantastic … you have all the time in the world. You’re all set and secure in life, and you’re not building your career,” he gushed. “Now, I’m just hanging around the house playing with [my daughter]. It’s great.” For Steve, the joy of fatherhood far outweighs the demands of stardom.

From Screen to Reality: Lessons in Parenthood

The Only Murders in the Building actor has played fathers in countless cult classics and beloved television shows. In an August 2021 interview with The Irish Times, the comedy legend admitted that these roles prepared him for the challenges and joys of real-life fatherhood.

“I was not a kid person, and when I did Parenthood, I would see these kids, who were like little freakish things, and I’d realize: ‘They’re not so bad; I actually like them,’” he confessed. “So, it did pave the way to an understanding that I would like children. Now, I see a kid and I’m staring at it like: ‘Oooh! Ahhh!’ Especially a little toddler.”

Steve’s journey to fatherhood hasn’t just been about playing dads on screen—it’s been about embracing the real thing with open arms and a loving heart.
