Tina Turner: A Mother First

Even though Tina Turner was known worldwide for her powerful voice and electrifying performances, she was also a mother who cherished her family deeply. She had four children—two who are still with us today, Ike Turner Jr. and Michael Turner, and two who have passed on, Ronnie Turner and Craig Turner. After their marriage, Tina adopted Ike’s two children from a previous relationship, Ike Jr. and Michael, and Ike also adopted Tina’s eldest son, Craig. It was a beautiful blending of families, but as we all know, life can take unexpected turns.

Tragically, Tina faced some of the hardest moments any parent could imagine. In July 2018, her eldest son, Craig, died by suicide. It was a devastating blow that left her heartbroken. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, Craig died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in California. Despite the heartache, Tina found a way to cope. A year after Craig’s passing, she opened up about her feelings in an interview with CBS News. “I think Craig was lonely, that’s what I think really got him more than anything else,” she said with raw honesty. “I have pictures all around of him smiling, and I think I’m sensing that he’s in a good place. I really do.”

Tina’s love for her children was boundless, and she carried that love with her throughout her life. Unfortunately, her family faced another loss in December 2022 when her son Ronnie passed away at the age of 62. His wife, Afida Turner, shared the news on Instagram, calling it a "tragedy."
